About the event:
‘Shifting Syllables’ is an interactive performance that explores the repercussions of having one’s identity subject to scrutiny through their names. It attempts to initiate a dialogue about the need for active efforts to diminish our social and cultural differences, with the aim of forging a more inclusive society, nation, and global community.
This performance seeks to delve into the experiences of Indian and Asian- American poets about their names, utilising their poetry as the primary source of reference. It references three poems: ‘On listening to your teacher take attendance’ by Aimee Nezhukumatathil, ‘An Introduction’ by Kamala Das and ‘Cardamom Vowels’ by Aruni Wijesinghe.
