The Three Seas (Aus/Ind) is a fuse folk music band from West Bengal & Gorkhaland with spiritual jazz, rock and reggae. Soaring Baul vocals, Himalayan chants and traditional North Indian instruments (khamak, dupki, esraj & dotara) with immersive, uplifting and at times trance-inducing, this unique project extends the possibilities of collaborative music making.
Workshops cover topics including:
•Intercultural collaborative music making: where to start?
•The challenges and benefits of intercultural music practice
•Composing & arranging intercultural music
•Insights into jazz harmony & composition
•How to communicate musical ideas effectively in intercultural contexts
• How to use jazz skills + playing techniques to communicate in diverse musical contexts
Bio:
Dr. Matt Keegan is a saxophonist and composer from Sydney, Australia. A project leader of 30 years experience, Keegan has produced and released 8 albums that feature his work as a composer, arranger and soloist. He is the artistic director of the intercultural ensemble The Three Seas (IND/ AUS).
Hilary Geddes is an in-demand guitarist in the jazz and improvised music scenes. She was the 2021 Freedman Jazz Fellow.
Brendan Clark has completed his Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (University of Sydney) in 2013.
Raju Das Baul is a Khamak and vocal virtuoso from Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Gaurab Chatterjee is a renowned drummer based in Kolkata, India. He is a founding member of Bangla rock band Lakkhichhara.
Deo Ashis Mothey is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Kalimpong..
