17 : 30 | Ahmedabad
Arthshila Ahmedabad invites you to the talk, ‘Shout Out: Let Your Voice Be Heard’ by the Fulbright Scholar and Interdisciplinary U.S. Artist, Colette Copeland.
DETAILS:
Date: 14 September 2024 | Saturday.
Time: 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm.
In conjunction with the audio installation, Colette Copeland will discuss her collaborative community experimental sound project, which amplifies voices that have historically been silenced, specifically female, non-binary and queer voices. The project began in Texas after the state made abortion illegal, restricting women’s rights and health care options. Texas also leads the U.S. with over 200 proposed legislations that will restrict LGBTQIA+ rights. When she was awarded the Fulbright in 2023, she expanded the project to India.
The project challenges listeners to practice deep listening. Copeland asks listeners to contemplate the idea of listening as a form of activism. She states, “What would happen if we all practiced deep listening as a form of radical resistance? How might it transform us? Our community? Our world?”
Colette Copeland is an interdisciplinary visual artist, university educator and arts writer. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute in New York and her MFA from Syracuse University. Over the past 31 years her work has been exhibited in 34 solo exhibitions and 156 group exhibitions/festivals spanning 36 countries. She teaches art and digital media at University of Texas.
