Vedant Srinivas, resident scholar, will be curating a film titled Pitru Chaaya, by the Tamil filmmaker Soudhamini.
Synopsis:
Inspired by the music of Carnatic vocalist M.D. Ramanathan, the film travels through the spaces he inhabited in his lifetime as if to invoke his absent spirit. A young generation is split between a devastating sense of loss and wary neglect. Regardless of both, the music prevails.
Soudhamini’s works lie on the cusp between cinema and other forms of traditional and vernacular culture in South India including music, poetry, performance, and ritual. The screening will be followed by a discussion on vernacular possibilities of cinematic form.
Bio:
Vedant is an independent researcher, writer, and film programmer from Delhi, with a background in philosophy, filmmaking, and art history.
We look forward to your participation!
