This session will feature the contribution of Guru Bipin Singh and the Jhaveri Sisters in establishing a classical approach to Manipuri dance through compositions that are based on tenets from the Vaishnava Shastras. A Sunday morning dance demonstration will be presented by eminent Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri and Sanjib Bhattacharya. The performance is presented on the occasion of the opening weekend of the archival exhibition, Nayana Jhaveri : A Life in Lasya. All are warmly invited.
Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, is one of the four renowned Jhaveri sisters, is a celebrated Manipuri dancer, scholar, and teacher. Under the guidance of Guru Bipin Singh, she has dedicated her life to preserving and propagating the classical traditions of Manipuri dance. Known for her mastery of both tandava (masculine) and lasya(feminine) elements, she has also contributed significantly to research and documentation of the art form.
Sanjib Bhattacharya is an accomplished Manipuri Dance Exponent, Teacher and well-known choreographer and collaborator of India and abroad. He has received his training under the tutelage of Guru Bipin Singh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Kalavati Devi, Manjushree Chaki, Sircar and Mamata Shankar.
