Arthshila Ahmedabad houses a curated collection of books, periodicals, digital resources and films on architecture, design and visual culture. The collection is available for public access from the space.
A diverse, eclectic repository on architecture, design and visual culture, including disciplines such as photography, history, theory, and arts amongst others. A small part of this collection has been curated for young readers. The books are hosted in an unconventional ‘library’, which has been designed as an encounter medium, enabling readers to discover content. Currently housing 1200 books, the space has the capacity for 6000. From essentials to premium titles otherwise not widely accessible, this collection is every readers’ delight. The collection serves as an introductory expression for a layman, in academic coursework for a student, or a wonderful space to browse and read for anyone else. The collection will keep growing by way of a rolling list. The rolling list is partially curated in-house.
At Arthshila Ahmedabad, the film collection is a curation of visual stories, narratives, and documentaries showcasing how design, architecture, and visual culture of various forms and impacts, weave into our everyday lives. The collection has a diverse mix of some classic design documentaries, critical dialogues as well as feature films by independent and experimental filmmakers from India and abroad. This growing collection keeps in mind themes such as city, space-making, placemaking, architecture, design, society, visual practices in popular culture, textures, etc. With the launch of the centre, we currently host 75 films. The films are available on Vimeo from the centre. Interested groups of people can access the AV space on the first floor to screen a film of their choice.
The periodicals available at the centre are dynamic. Every month, new magazines will arrive with information about specific topics of interest. To name a few - Harvard Design Magazine, Communication Arts, Dwell, Juxtapoz, Pool, Art Review Asia, Take on Art, Architectural Review, Domus, Slanted, Design Anthology, etc. This list expands to include magazines on political and current affairs, environment, and technology across titles such as The New Yorker, Caravan, Wired, National Geographic, EPW, Economist, Sanctuary Asia, etc.
Access subscriptions to digital periodicals such as The Architectural Review, New Yorker, TIME, Caravan, National Geography along with access to film streaming platforms such as MUBI. We also have, currently, a subscription to the online learning platform Domestika. These are all available to our visitors through desktops on each floor of the space.
