The Unseen Sequence is not simply about Malavika Sarukkai; it deliberates on the valuable connections and departures that the artist makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition. Today, even as she impresses her footprint on the world stage as a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, Malavika finds herself making increasingly personal and difficult choices about how she wishes to lead that life. The questions she asks are essential and they have no easy answers in a simple re-iteration of craft. It is this co-existence of consummate expression with a deeper spiritual questioning that makes her dance so exciting.

Sumantra Ghosal spent over 25 years directing advertising films before shifting to documentaries, focusing on the arts. His notable works include The Speaking Hand (on Zakir Hussain), The Unseen Sequence (on Malavika Sarukkai), and Kaifinama (on Kaifi Azmi). He has also made films on music for NCPA and a series on art for the Museum of Art & Photography.

A longtime collaborator with Malavika Sarukkai, he has contributed to projects like Thari – The Loom and Anubandh. As a translator, his works include Kaifi Azmi – Poems/Nazms and Dhanak, a collection of Jan Nisar Akhtar’s poetry.
