This exhibit – Sense and Sustainability: a vignette into earth friendly seats – aims to showcase pieces and celebrate the work of such ‘invested’ creators of Indian seats which not only uphold the ideals of sustainability but also invoke the core sensibility of modernism.

The book, ‘From the Frugal to the Ornate: Stories of the Seat in India’ traces the evolution of the Seat over centuries from a simple ‘Baithak’ to the advanced ergonomically designed modern chair, while meandering through the social, political, cultural, and historical landscape of the Indian subcontinent. It reflects upon the marked shift in the way practitioners, users, and analysts conceptualise and engage with object culture, and a subsequent ‘turn to the material’.

Formally started in February 2006, Godrej Archives aims at preserving Godrej’s history and unfolding its contribution to the industrial history of India. Godrej Archives strives to nurture a culture of documentation and history keeping in the organisation and promote and popularize business history among the general public to warrant an audience and user base.
