A campus is a place formed by its buildings but also by the spaces in between. As a campus grows, both its enclosed and open spaces gather memories transforming ‘space’ into ‘place’ with stories, character, and meaning. The IIM Bangalore campus, conceived and executed by architects Balkrishna Doshi and Achyut Kanvinde with subsequent additions by Sanjay Mohe & Medappa, exemplifies how enduring design fosters a sense of place.
The book, โ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐๐: ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒโ shares how this campus came into being and how it has been experienced over time. Through its pages, the book reveals the thought processes, design philosophies, and the interplay between architecture and community. The narrative includes conversations with faculty, staff, startups, and alumni, highlighting “hallway conversations” in the pergola corridors and how certain spaces facilitated “open conversations within closed networks” and “serendipitous interactions.”
Using the book as a starting point, this session will explore how spaces with memories transcend functionality and time, becoming places of meaning and identity.
