in collaboration with Arthshila Santiniketan invites registrations for ‘Essential Matters: A Winter School on Arts Research, Philosophy, and the Medium’. & a Festival of Experimental Films, curated by Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art E.V and supported by Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata.

In the 4-day ‘winter school’, Essential Matters, we tackle the question of research in arts practice, particularly in relation to audio-visual medium and ask: how do artists conduct their research before they undertake their work? What conceptual, aesthetic, ideological, and philosophical questions become pertinent as we speculate, fabulate, and create ‘art-work’?

The Festival:

The festival brings individual explorations and expressions of personal and collective histories. Employing a vast range of cinematic approaches from essayistic found footage collages to documentary investigations to absurdist narratives, these experimental films unearth fraught narratives and generate connections across time and space.
